Maritez Apigo

Instructional Designer and English Professor
Contra Costa College

Over the last two decades, Maritez Apigo has had the honor of teaching in the Bay Area, CA and in Hawaii community colleges, high schools, and middle schools. Currently, she is an Instructional Designer and an online and hybrid English and ESL Professor at Contra Costa College. She is an @ONE Online Course Facilitator and a CVC-OEI Peer Reviewer. Maritez's teaching pedagogy illuminates her commitment to social justice, equity, innovation, and student success. When she’s not teaching, you might discover her behind the turntables DJing, in the dance studio working on her dance technique, or at the park playing with her two young children.

After a 20-year career in aerospace as an avionics engineer and a computer scientist, Ed is now a professor at Antelope Valley College where he teaches computer applications and computer science courses online. Ed holds a Ph.D. in Educational Technology, an MS in Systems Management, a BS in Computer Science, and an AS in Computer Information Science. He has had a passion for online education since 1997 and is excited about sharing his passion with other Can•Innovators!

I received my Master of Science in Applied Economics and Finance from the University of California, Santa Cruz. I received my BA, with Honors, in Economics from UCSC and my AA from Santa Monica College. I have been teaching traditional classes, and online classes, since 2008. I have taught classes at MJC, Cabrillo, MPC, Gavilan, Saddleback, Santa Rosa JC, College of the Sequoias, and Humphrey's University. I have attended classes at Goldenwest College, San Diego Mesa, San Diego City, Santa Monica College, and Cuesta.

Chelsea is a tenured instructor of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and the Distance Education Coordinator at Laney College. She is also a lead reviewer for the Online Education Initiative and a new facilitator for @ONE. She is passionate about helping her colleagues develop creative, inclusive activities for their online classes, and equipping her students with technology skills that will open doors in both their educational and professional lives.

JoEllen Green has taught math, statistics, and computer science for over 17 years. She is a decision science instructor at Fresno City College. She has also taught both at the high school and college levels. She obtained a Master of Science degree in both Statistics (University of California, Riverside) and Information Technology (Capella University). Her Bachelor of Science degree is in Statistics from the University of California, Riverside. She has submitted and been approved to teach two decision science courses through the OEI.

Dr. Jory Hadsell currently serves as the Executive Director of the California Virtual Campus - Online Education Initiative. The CVC-OEI, managed through a grant to the Foothill-De Anza Community College District, is a statewide program to assist students in accelerating completion of their educational goals, through increasing access to high-quality online transferable courses, degrees and certificates offered by the California Community Colleges (CCC). The CVC-OEI represents a comprehensive and collaborative online education ecosystem that supports faculty in leveraging effective instructional practices and coordinates student access to shared technology platforms, including providing CCC students with access to the robust state-wide inventory of online CCC courses and programs across California.

DJ earned a BA in Liberal Studies and MA in Composition from CSU San Bernardino. For over 12 years, she has taught for multiple community colleges, four-year and private universities, and now CVC-OEI @ONE. Recently, DJ was hired as an Instructional Designer for the Riverside Community College District to help face-to-face and online faculty improve their course design. DJ relies on ConferZoom for her face-to-face and online courses as well as her Instructional Design work. She is excited to share her knowledge because everyone Can-Innovate!

A CCC distance education leader for over a decade, Pat is dedicated to increasing student success through high quality online learning. She retired in Jan. 2014 as Executive Director of the CCC Online Education Initiative (OEI), received the OLC Frank Mayadas Award, served on ASCCC Exec. Committee, taught digital media courses online, serves on the planning and implementation committee for the OTC. She served MSJC as Dean of Instructional Technology and DE, co-directed the @ONE professional development project, and currently teaches online educators through @ONE. Pat also works on Educational Partnerships with American Public University System.

Kona Jones is the Director of Online Learning and coordinates Faculty Academy at Richland Community College. She is responsible for the development of faculty and student technology training materials, provides instructional design support to faculty, oversees the assessment of online courses, and facilitates faculty professional development. Kona loves teaching and is an adjunct instructor of statistics and developmental psychology. Her passion is student success and in 2019 she was awarded Adjunct Faculty of the Year. Kona is also a Canvas Coach and Canvassador, contributing extensively in the online Canvas Community and elsewhere.

Erin is a principal consultant on the Learning and Strategy team at Instructure, which means she gets to travel around the country and help K12, higher ed, and corporations learn how to deepen their usage of Canvas and other Instructure products (read: be more awesome!). Prior to working for Instructure, Erin was a high school English teacher and school administrator in Pennsylvania, where she lives. She loves college basketball, gardening, animal adoption, and the beach.

Monique Kelley has taught accounting for over 20 years. She is an accounting instructor at Fresno City College and has served as department chair and on numerous committees. She has also taught at Georgia Perimeter College and Morris Brown College in Georgia, where she holds an active CPA license since May 1997. She earned an online teaching certificate at Cerro Coso College in July 2002 which started her journey of teaching online. She was awarded 1st place for her poster board presentation at the 2018 Teachers of Accounting at Two-Year College (TACTYC) in Tampa Bay, FL. Monique enjoys being a life-long learner!

She is also pursuing an EdD at SDSU focusing on Community College Leadership. Logan's favorite thing about Canvas is the ability to customize the platform in order to improve educational experiences for online students. In 2019 he earned his doctorate in education from Drexel University with a research focus on the ethical use of learning analytics.

As an interdisciplinary meaning-making maven she seeks to build bridges across the humanities, social sciences and distance education. Her academic work has been published in Storytelling, Self, and Society (Wayne State University Press 2018) and Systemic Collapse and Renewal (Peter Lang 2019). She has been teaching and designing courses online for 10 years.

Bonnie Peters has spent the last 19 years in the California Community College system serving in various student services positions such as counseling, teaching (on-campus and online), and educational leadership (on-campus and online). As of 2014, she has been serving as the Chief Student Services Officer/Director of Student Experience for the California Virtual Campus-Online Education Initiative (CVC-OEI), providing administrative and programmatic leadership for the CVC-OEI Online Student Experience Division. She holds both an M.S. in Counseling and M.A in Teaching and Learning with Technology.

Armeda Reitzel is a professor of communication at Humboldt State University (HSU) where she has taught since 1981. This semester she is teaching online at College of the Redwoods (CR). She has developed and taught three fully online courses: Fundamentals of Speech Communication (HSU), American Public Discourse (HSU), and Intercultural Communication (CR). In 2016, she was a recipient of the California State University Award for Quality Online Learning and Teaching (QOLT) for creating a quality course (Communication 100-Fundamentals of Speech Communication). Dr. Reitzel is a fan of Analytics Beta.

Aloha has been designing and teaching online information literacy courses for 10 years at a variety of CCCs, including Cabrillo, West Valley, Mission, Gavilan, and San Jose City College. Aloha is also a Lead Course Reviewer for the CVC-OEI and co-facilitates three fantastic @ONE courses: Online Teaching & Design, Peer Online Course Review, and Digital Citizenship. Aloha also serves as an OER Liaison and Library discipline lead for the ASCCC OER Initiative, and has provided instructional design support for the CCC Zero Textbook Cost degree program. She spends so much time working online that she once accidentally called her youngest son "Canvas"!

My recent projects include working with the CVC-OEI and various constituents at the college advocating for and building equity-minded student solutions that benefit the overall student experience at the college.

In her free time, Kim loves to travel, write and engage in physical activity (cycling, hiking, swimming!) with her partner and three daughters. Since 2011, I've had the pleasure of working with faculty from across the state in various roles with @ONE. In January 2019, I started a new role as Interim Dean of Online Learning with Foothill College. Being back on the Foothill campus is especially meaningful to me, as Foothill was the first CCC at which I taught. Transitioning from my faculty role at @ONE to an administrative role has been a big shift, but the important piece of my old job that my new job shares is helping faculty design and deliver amazing online learning experiences. I'm excited to engage with my peers across the state during Can•Innovate!
