Certificate in Online Teaching & Design

The design of your course has a major impact on student success. Based on the exemplary criteria from the CVC-OEI’s Course Design Rubric, the Certificate in Online Teaching & Design will help you push your course to the next level, whether you’re experienced or new to online teaching.

Participants complete coursework facilitated by experts from across the state covering the four areas of the CVC-OEI Rubric:

  1. Content Presentation
  2. Interaction
  3. Assessment
  4. Accessibility

Participants can choose to complete our 12-week course, Online Teaching & Design (OTD), or the series of four, 4-week courses listed below (4×4). Digital Badges are awarded for completing each of the four courses and will earn a Certificate in Online Teaching & Design upon completion of the Capstone Course. (The capstone project is built into the 12-week OTD course.)

Learning Pathways

Participants can choose between two pathways through the courses:

Pathway 1:  Take the 12-week Online Teaching & Design (OTD) course. This is the best option if you want a streamlined experience.

Pathway 2: Take the four-week courses (4×4) listed below. This is the best option if you want to spread out your coursework and complete it in shorter chunks. Then you would register for the “4×4” Capstone course.

The Online Teaching & Design Capstone (4×4) Course

To register, you must be an employee of a California Community College.

In addition to coursework, participants seeking a Certificate in Online Teaching & Design will complete a capstone project after completing our four, 4 week courses (4×4). The capstone project is built into the 12-week Online Teaching & Design (OTD) course. This project will involve developing an orientation module and one content module in your Canvas sandbox that is aligned with the CVC-OEI Course Design Rubric. You will present your sandbox in a live, online session with your mentor. Your mentor will ensure your modules are aligned. Then you will create a 2-3 minute video showcasing one exemplary course design element.

  • Once you complete the “4×4” learning pathway, you are eligible to register for the Capstone course.
  • After you register, you will be paired with a mentor who will support you through the completion of your Capstone project. We expect capstone candidates to complete the project within 30 days of registering.
  • Once you complete your capstone project, you will be awarded a digital badge for the @ONE Certificate in Online Teaching & Design.
