SUMMARY:Mapping Content and Contexts with My Maps and Tour Builder by Google
DESCRIPTION:Interactive\, digital maps provide learners a way to explore relationships between abstract ideas and real-world contexts. In this session\, you'll meet a teacher and a student who will show examples of student work created with My Maps\, an easy tool for making and sharing custom Google maps online. Students collaborate by adding "pins" to locations on a shared class map along with their own written content\, images\, and videos. Examples of student work include an icebreaker activity\, a map of international events\, and a map of historical figures and events. You'll also see examples of how people are using Tour Builder to tell stories around the world through Google Earth's imagery. As a child\, he spent many weekends visiting the natural history museum in Los Angeles with his father. These visits\, more than anything\, spurred his interest in the sciences\, and eventually led to a career in biology. \nMr. Miranda spent his collegiate years attending such institutions as Fullerton College; California State University\, San Bernardino; and the University of California\, Riverside; during which time he earned a BS and MS degree in biology. Following that\, Mr. Miranda was a biology professor for nearly 8 years with Taft College in California’s central valley before transitioning into administration. \nMr. Miranda came to Cerritos College in the spring of 2012 as the Dean of Academic Affairs. In February of 2016 he was appointed the Acting Vice President of Academic Affairs and Assistant Superintendent\, and in May 2017 he was appointed to serve in this position permanently. Rick continually facilitates opportunities for the campus to develop culturally responsive teaching and learning. He supports innovative education\, curriculum and pedagogy\, integrative teaching and learning\, and research-based methodology. He strives to empower and encourage success by providing equitable access to resources. \n\n\nMarsha Reske \nDean Distance Education\nAmerican River College \nBio: I have been plugged into online teaching and learning since introducing my students to the wonders of the internet while teaching English at the University of Guanajuato in Mexico in the 1990s. When I returned to the U.S. in 2001\, I started working at American River College where I have held a variety of positions. My current role as the Dean of Distance Education is the most exciting one yet. Our DE team is developing ARC ONLINE which will provide students with fully online certificate and degree pathways with wrap around online support services.

DESCRIPTION:NameCoach is a new tool provided by the OEI to California Community Colleges that nurtures inclusion in the classroom and other campus settings. It is now available to all OEI consortiums colleges at no cost and available to all CCCs at a discount. NameCoach provides students with a simple way to record a pronunciation of their name and convey their gender that is easily shared with their instructor and student peers.
