SUMMARY:Reimagining Writing
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our CCC Digital Learning Day program. \nPresenter 1:\nTransforming a Writing Assignment with Creativity and Digital Curation\nMeg Phelps\, @YourTeacherMeg\, Art History Professor\, Ventura College \nMy "Make Your Own Museum" assignment directs students to design their own virtual museum for my art appreciation class using Adobe Spark. They develop online literacy\, basic skills for content creation\, exercise their own creativity\, and produce a beautiful product for a student portfolio. \nPresenter 2:\nWhat Would a Textbook Created by Students Look Like?\nSuzanne Wakim\, @SuzanneWakim\, Biology Professor\, Butte College \nIf given the chance to create a textbook\, what would students want to include and how would they want to present the information? I decided to find out. Over the course of 5 semesters\, my online honors biology class will be building a biology textbook. The first semester’s class built an outline for the book\, the second identified good sources for information\, and the third started the first draft. Next semester\, we will finish the first draft and then we will begin editing students' contributions. The class uses Google Docs to create their content as well as comment on other student contribution. I will discuss how I structured the assignments and how students work through the process. \nDuration: 45 minutes\nCost: Free \nRegistration required. SUMMARY:Sharing Our Way Through Times of Change!
DESCRIPTION:This event was part of our CCC Digital Learning Day program. \nPresenter 1:\nSupporting Online Professors with a Shared ACCJC Student Success Checklist\nJodie Steeley\, Director of Distance Education & Instructional Technology\, Fresno City College \nFresno City College implemented a check-list to encourage professors to apply ACCJC compliance standards and engage them in the discussion of online course design and pedagogy. Using a checklist authored by Fabiola Torres from Glendale Community College\, faculty at FCC where challenged to complete the checklist and submit their compliance based courses into a drawing for Amazon Dots that link Canvas and Alexa. With a 40% submission rate and 70% of faculty attending available workshops\, one-on-one\, and drop-in sessions\, student engagement and accessibility became popular topics for collegial interactions among faculty and distance education staff. \nPresenter 2:\nHow did you do that? Lessons Learned in Closing a Digital Divide\nJames Theall\, Computer Information Systems (CIS) Professor\, College of the Desert \nAs a web design instructor\, I believe engaging content can make for more engaged readers and students.  In this session\, I will share how a new layout\, a well-placed line\, box or splash of color can transform a boring page into an engaging course content page or assignment.  When I began teaching in Fall\, 2016\, I had the opportunity to create a new course shell in Canvas for a beginner’s computer literacy course. In the process\, I explored every tool at my disposal and dove in to creating content pages with the ‘limited’ Rich Text Editor and the even more limited HTML editor. Wanting to share what I had learned\, I created a compendium of reusable snippets and interactive HTML tag anatomy breakdowns to share with my peers who wanted to know “How did you do THAT!?” \n  \n  \n\nSession Resources:\nResources in support of Jodie's presentation: \n\nAccreditation Checklist - Note: The sample syllabus language and regular effective contact requirements in this check list may not align with your local college’s policies and procedures\, so be sure to look into your local language before adopting or adapting.\n\nResource in support of James' presentation: \n\nStarter Package of HTML Enhancements for the Canvas HTML Editor\, by James Theall.\n\n\nSession Archive:\n \nQuestions?\nDo you have a question or a reflection to share about this session? SUMMARY:Supporting Students ... Digitally!
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of our Digital Learning Day Program. \nPresenter 1: \nFrom One Semester's Learners to the Next: Advice for Success\nMatt Mooney\, @Prof_Mooney\, History Professor\, Santa Barbara Community College \nAt the end of every semester I ask my students to write a short paragraph of advice to next semester’s students. They discuss the one or two most important things that enabled them to succeed in the course. I choose the most insightful of these responses and collect them together in a Padlet. New students review this collection of advice as their very first assignment in the new semester. After introducing themselves to their classmates via the Canvas discussion forum\, the new students discuss the most insightful piece of advice passed along from last semester’s students. Each student then responds to at least one classmate with advice the classmate “did not include in his or her Personal Introduction.” In other words\, he or she will offer their classmate additional ideas from last semester's students. \nPresenter 2:\nCounseling in the Cloud\nJavier Villaseñor\, Counselor\, Long Beach City College \nCounselors provide invaluable support to students\, but not just for students who are on campus.  This presentation will demonstrate how counselors are interacting with students online using Cranium Café\, powered by ConexEd\, a FERPA and ADA compliant online counseling platform available at no cost to OEI consortium colleges and at a discounted rate for all CCCs. \n  \n  \n\nSession Resources:\nResources in support of Javier's presentation: \n\nLearn more about using Cranium Café\, powered by ConexED\, to offer counseling for your online CCC students.\nCounselor – ConexED Platform Guide\nFront Desk – ConexED Training\nStudent Self-Schedule\n\nResources in support of Matt's presentation: \n\n\nFall 2017 - collect advice from current students \n\n\nInstructions for Check-in (#4) \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOver the break - instructor harvests the most insightful student advice from the previous semester and creates a Padlet page that showcases the advice. \n\n\nADVICE for Dr. Mooney’s SPRING 2018 online students [in Padlet] \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpring 2018 - Incoming Students Complete the Personal Introduction [very first Discussion Forum]. Student instructions are below: \n\n\nSubmit a Personal Introduction audio or video recording in the Discussion forum below. Your recorded Personal Introduction should: \n\n\nShare with your classmates and instructor a little bit about who you are. \n\n\nExplain which piece\, or pieces\, of advice from my former students you find most helpful [click here to access their advice]\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nSession Archive (will be provided within a week after the event):\n \n  \nQuestions?\nDo you have a question or a reflection to share about this session?
