Making Creativity SPARKle in Teaching and Learning

Adobe Spark Video is a free tool that enables the creation of videos that are like visual stories. In this session, Matt Mooney, a History professor at Santa Barbara City College, and Amber Greene, a student of Matt’s, will discuss how Adobe Spark Video was used to cultivate creativity in Matt’s teaching and Amber’s learning. Get teaching tips and advice from Matt and learn from Amber about the impact of using creation as a form of assessment.

  • Colonial Slavery by Matt Mooney, faculty at Santa Barbara College. An instructor-created brief video included at the start of a module to clarify a sticky concept.
  • Fire and Ice by Amber Greene, student at Santa Barbara Community College. A student-created video created to demonstrate mastery of a historical event.
  • The Truck Stop by Michelle Macfarlane, faculty at Sierra College. A great example that demonstrates how to implement story-telling into your course design to make a human connection.
  • Welcome to Soc 2 by Katie Conklin, faculty at West Hills College. A friendly welcome video from Katie to her incoming students.

Matt Mooney Faculty Santa Barbara City College

Bio: Dr. Matthew Mooney is a professor of history at Santa Barbara City College. He has been teaching face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online courses since 2006. He has also served as a Lead Reviewer for the Online Education Initiative since 2015.

Amber Greene Student Santa Barbara City College

Bio: Amber is a single mother and a survivor of domestic violence. Her educational goal is to help empower our community through the utilization of empathy and compassion in the healthcare industry and beyond. She is a sophomore at Santa Barbara City College, majoring in Nursing and Psychology.
