First Friday: Teaching Science Courses Online

First Fridays

This webinar is part of our May First Friday event. This session is intended for faculty members in the Sciences who are interested in teaching hybrid or fully online courses. Alison Varty, faculty at College of the Siskiyous, will present some of the current trends in online science education, emphasize different online science course format options, provide ideas for engaging science students in online courses and related resources, and discuss some of the relevant pros and cons. Alison will draw on her personal experiences teaching hybrid Botany courses at College of the Siskiyous and on extensive research she has conducted over the past 3 years in the preparation of two academic papers on this topic.

Alison Varty

Alison studied Biology and Environmental Studies as an undergraduate at the University of Michigan. In graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she studied Botany with an emphasis on Plant Ecology and Restoration. After graduate school, she taught Biology and Sustainability courses at Loyola University Chicago until accepting her current position at the College of the Siskiyous. At COS, she teaches hybrid and face-to-face Biology and Environmental Science courses and, since 2015, online science education has been the focus of her scholarship.
