I wonder if color-blindness--if assuming that posture--prevents us from seeing what we need to about difference. 00:42:56 Dr.Cherisse Hunter-Southern: We need to know and acknowledge as well as embrace our difference and how each these contribute to how people process information 00:44:38 Julio Soto: Here are a few great interviews I've used in class, featuring Dr. Steele's work: 00:44:52 Julio Soto: https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=125859207 00:45:07 Julio Soto: https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=125859207 00:45:08 Penny Shreve: @Dr. Cherrisse YE! 00:45:36 Fabiola Torres: @JulioSoto. Thank you. 00:46:15 Dayamudra Dennehy: Thanks, @JulieSoto. Are they the same link? 00:46:23 Alexandra Springer: Thanks for sharing! 00:46:45 Michelle Newhart: Framing has a huge effect on social behaviors. It is a general rule of which this is a specific case... 00:46:47 Julio Soto: Most recently on NPR's Hidden Brain: https://hiddenbrain.org/podcast/how-they-see-us/ 00:46:57 Michelle Newhart: Love Hidden Brain! 00:47:27 Michelle Pacansky-Brock (she/her): Julio, I love that Hidden Brain episode! Thanks for sharing. 00:48:17 Dr.Cherisse Hunter-Southern: Just think as African Americans we don't have the ability to assimilate but they expect us to and then we have to convince them other wise that we are just as capable due to all the discourses of which have been prescribed in our society 00:49:35 Julio Soto: And I think it is also important to consider the work of W.E.B. Du Bois, especially his concepts of double consciousness, and the veil, when analyzing stereotype threat. Here is a short video The Atlantic put together on these concepts: https://www.theatlantic.com/video/index/554972/web-dubois-striving-negro/ 00:50:17 Dr.Cherisse Hunter-Southern: @Julio yes that's right 00:51:13 Wendy Mazon: @Julio Thank you so much Julio. I appreciate you sharing these resources. : ) 00:52:57 Dr.Cherisse Hunter-Southern: No we don't trust anything look at our history 00:53:23 Katheryn McGuthry: We were called into a preschool meeting for our son when we lived in Savannah, GA. He was the only African-American child in the private school. The teacher talked 30min about negative things that our son was doing. For example, when it was time to clean up, she said he just sat there. I was getting upset, but my husband looked at her and calmly said that we listened to her talk negatively about our son for 1/2 hour, and he simply asked is she had anything good to say about him. The director of the school had a paradigm shift and also asked her the question. He was moved to another class, and actively participated after that. 00:53:25 Marlene Forney: Thank you for sharing the reference to WEB. My husband and I have been discussing his pererspectives vis a vis DEI. L 00:54:09 Michelle Pacansky-Brock (she/her): Thank you for sharing, Katheryn. 00:55:49 Sue VanHattum: Thank you for your story. It means a lot to me to be able to hear people’s stories. 00:55:50 Penny Shreve: @Dr. Cherisse, it seems so obvious, but we can intentionally be oblivious to others. Think how sensitive we are to someone who may have experienced other negative life experience - but do not see or what to see this lack of trust 00:55:52 Dr.Cherisse Hunter-Southern: Kateryn I'm hurt learning this about your family and you are good for not flying off the handle cause that is so hurtful 00:56:18 Janey Skinner: I am motivated to explore this more -- the cultivation of trust 00:57:09 Julio Soto: The issue of trust or lack thereof is well addressed by Dr Bettina Love in the first chapter of her book, We Want To Do More Than Survive. I encourage you to read the entire book but chapter one titled, We Who Are Dark (Dr. Love borrowing from Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois) speaks of why the lack of trust. 00:57:51 Maritez Apigo: Yes, building trust is foundational! 👏🏽 00:58:10 Susmita Sengupta: Trust is the key ! 00:58:17 Dr.Cherisse Hunter-Southern: My dissertation was about this are students are getting their needs met within institutions and what are institutions doing to ensure students are getting their needs met to be great professionals 00:58:39 Dr.Cherisse Hunter-Southern: And trust was the major factor in a student's success 00:58:44 Julio Soto: Erving Goffman! Dramaturgy! I'm loving this! 00:58:56 Fabiola Torres: @JulioSoto You’re my hero! Gracias, hermano. You added the needed sparkle to my DuBois module. 00:59:08 Dr.Cherisse Hunter-Southern: Dr. Claude is telling the Truth today 01:00:00 Davena BurnsPeters: I have not understood the full meaning behind the statement of "he's cool" or "he's down" until today. Thank you for sharing this nugget. 01:00:38 Grace Ding: I agree, Love and Trust is the key for our educators, and out society. 01:02:42 Michelle Pacansky-Brock (she/her): We invite you to share questions you have for Dr. Steele in the Q&A area. We’ll be getting to Q&A soon. 01:02:42 Dr.Cherisse Hunter-Southern: Oh yeah she is like really only they can understand math? she is either going to show up and show out or she is going run far away from that department 01:02:50 Michelle Coder: This is a huge problem common to classical music instruction. 01:03:30 Wendy Mazon: @Michelle- Agree. 01:03:43 Dr.Cherisse Hunter-Southern: say it again Michelle 01:05:09 Michelle Coder: Yup. All white, male European composers on the wall. I’m trying to decentralize NAWM in my courses. 01:06:33 Scott Hamm: The iconography of our institutions communicates. As does the iconography in our online courses. 01:06:46 Dr.Cherisse Hunter-Southern: Support Support Support 01:06:59 Wendy Mazon: @Michelle- I would love to meet with anyone interested in furthering this discussion regarding classical music instruction. Please email me if interested. mazonwe@laccd.edu 01:07:26 Maria Vazquez-Low: Great idea 01:07:46 Ranmali Rodrigo: Wow, I wish I had had that! 01:07:49 Michelle Coder: Will do @Wendy! 01:07:52 Megan Eberhardt-Alstot: Hidden Curriculum 01:08:00 Tamara Tate: reminds me of something Brene Brown says -- Clear is Kind 01:08:02 Daniella Graves: Would anyone be interested in setting up a book club to discuss these themes? 01:08:21 Julieth Diaz Benitez: YES! @Daniella Graves 01:08:23 Sue VanHattum: @Daniella, sure 01:08:23 Scott Hamm: @Daniella- oh, H*@# yeah 01:08:28 Bob Nash: Was it just the timeline and deadlines that did the trick? 01:08:34 Sue VanHattum: Can you supply your email? 01:08:40 Bob Nash: Oh yes, also the support... 01:08:53 Daniella Graves: Great! Email me at dgraves@vcccd.edu and I will follow-up with all of you to set something up. 01:09:06 Sue VanHattum: 1. High standards, 2. You can meet them, 3. Here’s the support to help you do that 01:09:15 Julieth Diaz Benitez: @Bob, I think it has more to do with the perception that you have a network to rely on and help you remove the ambiguity along the way 01:09:18 Lizzie Brock: There is also the push to be flexible especially during Covid. How can our delivery/policies be both clear and flexible? 01:09:19 Michelle Pacansky-Brock (she/her): These themes will reoccur throughout our Fall into Humanizing series. You’ll pick up strategies for creating trust and identity safety in your online course. 01:09:28 Dr.Cherisse Hunter-Southern: Right cause research is not her only business and without clear expectations this causes psychological stress for here cause has to manage her family and her research and if she doesn't have that support at home and at work there lays her problem 01:09:33 Bob Nash: Yes, thanks. 01:09:40 Michelle Pacansky-Brock (she/her): Love seeing the connections here! 01:09:48 Julio Soto: Respect for Brene Brown; but in the context of this discussion, I would go with Dr Britney Cooper instead 01:10:09 Marlene Forney: Ha ha! Color blind as a truthful approach. Ha ha! 01:10:33 Scott Hamm: @Julio - what is some work from Dr. Cooper you would recommend? 01:10:56 Julio Soto: Look up Eloquent Rage 01:11:04 Marlene Forney: Developmental approach has been denigrated by CCC organization given California legislative moves. 01:11:06 Michelle Coder: Give them the tools. Yes, developmental approach instead of sink or swim! 01:11:38 Scott Hamm: @Julio - thanks. My wife has read it. 01:12:00 Dr.Cherisse Hunter-Southern: Say it again Michelle you are on it this is what my dissertation result showed support and tools turn into trust 01:12:20 Fabiola Torres: Follow Dr. Brittany Cooper on Twitter @ProfessorCrunk 01:12:31 Michelle Coder: @Danielle Yes on the book club! 01:12:35 Julio Soto: 👍🏽 01:13:19 Dr.Cherisse Hunter-Southern: yes book club 01:13:26 Allison Herman: This is a tragic irony. 01:14:10 Dr.Cherisse Hunter-Southern: you wont have to worry if you are providing tools and being authentic 01:14:17 Wendy Mazon: @Dr. Cherisse Hunter- I would love to read your dissertation. 01:14:59 Dr.Cherisse Hunter-Southern: I can send you a copy and prezi on my defense 01:15:31 Allison Herman: Thank you Dr. Hunter-Southern (and of course Dr. Steele) for reminders to come with our authentic selves to see our students in their authentic space. 01:15:40 Maria Vazquez-Low: Thank you! 01:15:40 Wendy Mazon: @Dr. Cherisse Hunter- That would be great! Very powerful with practical means for mitigating the ways in which students and teachers alike bring their identities and traumas to bear in the classroom and how we can mitigate the worst of what we believe about ourselves and each other and open new possibilities. 01:21:17 Bob Nash: What an excellent presentation!
