Plug and Play Adoptable Courses

Plug and Play Adoptable Courses is a pilot initiative designed to support colleges in adopting high-quality, ready-to-customize online courses aligned with statewide standards. These courses:

  • Reduce course preparation time for faculty
  • Ensure high-quality, accessible online learning experiences for students
  • Provide support for new faculty with little lead time to prepare course shells
  • Maintain space for faculty personalization and customization

Faculty adopting a Plug and Play course will have a solid foundation for quickly getting their course student-ready before it's ready for immediate use in the online classroom! Each course is aligned with the CVC@ONE Course Design Rubric and can be badged through the faculty member's own Local POCR process.

Additionally, all Plug and Play courses are developed with Open Educational Resources (OER) - making them accessible to students and educators regardless of location or financial situation!

Which courses are available for adoption?

Plug and Play courses are being developed in phases as part of the 2025–2026 pilot and are intentionally aligned with California’s statewide Common Course Numbering (CCN) implementation schedule. Course selection follows the CCN rollout to support systemwide consistency and transfer alignment.

Courses are released in development rounds.

How can I adopt a course?

  1. All of the Plug and Play courses are posted to the CCC Commons Consortium. To access them, you will need to log into your college Canvas account and click on the “Commons” button located on the left side global navigation column.
  2. Search for “CVC Plug and Play”. If none of the courses pop up, contact your Canvas administrator about enabling the Commons Consortium or email support@cvc.edu, and we can look into your access.
  3. Once you find a course, select “Import/Download”
  4. Select “Import into Canvas” and locate the appropriate Sandbox or Development shell.
    • Note: We do not recommend importing into a live shell, as all Plug and Play courses should be customized to your specific campus and personalized before copying into your live course(s). Work with your Canvas administrator to set up a new sandbox if you don’t have one available.
  5. Select “Import into Course”
    • Note: You may also download the course for later import or for use in a different Canvas instance.
  6. Go to your course and start personalizing it!

Where can I learn more about Plug and Play?

Those interested in learning more are invited to a webinar on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 11:00 AM. Consider sending deans and department chairs to this presentation! Presenters will give a more in-depth overview of the project and the steps to adopting a course. Registration information is available on the CVC@ONE website.

Suggested Activities to Get Started

Once you have added a Plug and Play course to your college’s Canvas dashboard and imported it into a sandbox or development shell, consider taking the following steps:

  • Review the “How to Use This Course” module, which includes an explanation of the Plug and Play environment and an instructor guide.
  • Work with your DE coordinator or instructional designer to identify key faculty and student support resources specific to your campus.
  • Review and personalize your welcome module
  • Make a brief welcome video to help your students get to know you and the course.
  • Make the course your own. As you become familiar with the structure, consider adding short videos, revising discussion prompts, adjusting activities, or incorporating examples that reflect your teaching style and your students’ needs.
