What's New with @ONE - the Online Network of Educators?

Happy New Year!!

Yes, that is what I meant to write. I know it’s July, but we operate on a July-June fiscal year, so this is the time the @ONE (Online Network of Educators) team reflects on last year’s work and gets ready to tackle a new set of goals. And we couldn’t be happier that we are entering the new year with two new instructional designers - Liz du Plessis and Shawn Valcárcel!

Liz du Plessis was the instructional designer at Santa Rosa Junior College for three years before more recently working for the fully online college (“CalBright”). Liz has been active with @ONE as a facilitator and presenter and is also an adjunct history instructor. Shawn Valcárcel comes to us from Mt. San Jacinto College, where he worked as an instructional designer. He is also a part-time online music instructor and has worked with @ONE in the past. Shawn and Liz join our current Instructional Designers, Helen Graves and Cheryl Chapman. You can see profiles and contact info for all of our team on our website.

Adoptable @ONE Courses are now in the Canvas Commons

Many of you have asked for copies of our courses so that you can use them as part of your local professional development programs. Helen Graves has been hard at work to respond to this need. Thanks to Helen, you can now find nearly a dozen CVC-OEI/@ONE adoptable courses in the Canvas Commons, including some of our most requested four-week courses, courses to support peer online course review and use of the rubric, and the self-paced accessibility courses brought to us by the CCC Accessibility Center. To find these adopable courses:

New Names for Our Certificates

@ONE has gone through changes over the last three years, and so have our certificate programs. Several years ago,  we replaced the original Online Teaching Certification with the Course Design Fundamentals Certificate. In 2017, we also introduced a second certificate in Online Teaching Principles. Since then, we have heard from many folks that it’s no longer clear which certificate is the right one to use for “certifying” faculty to teach online, or which one DE Coordinators should recommend to new faculty. 

We hope these small changes we’ve made to the names will help clear up any confusion:

Certificate in Online Teaching & Design

Formerly: Certificate in Course Design Fundamentals

We recommend this program for preparing/certifying faculty to teach online and to prepare staff and instructional designers who support online teaching. The certificate prepares participants to develop and teach effective, interactive, and accessible courses that promote student retention and success. 

Cheryl Chapman is leading a project this summer to redesign the 12-week Online Teaching and Design (OTD) course. It will continue to be one option for participants to earn the certificate, although Online Teaching and Design course may have a new name after the redesign! Look for a launch of the updated “OTD” in the fall. 

Advanced Certificate in Online Teaching Principles

We’ve added “Advanced” to the title of this certificate to reflect that we recommend this certificate for experienced online teachers, DE support staff, and instructional designers who are ready to explore how their humanized presence in the course along with culturally responsive and dynamic teaching practices can positively impact students.

Whether you're building your first online course or revising an existing one, this 12-week series will show you how to create the course you've always dreamed of teaching. You'll explore online learning theory, approaches to online course design, and strategies for supporting student success from within the structure of the four sections of the Online Education Initiative's Course Design Rubric:

  1. Course Design
  2. Interaction
  3. Assessment
  4. Accessibility

The learn-by-doing focus will have you building a powerful sample course in Canvas Sandbox, which you can then use as your own personal course creation blueprint. Fast-paced and innovative, this course is perfect for instructors new to Canvas and/or new to online teaching, while also providing innovative ideas for enhancing existing courses.

Details

Fulfills: This course is part of the Certificate in Online Teaching & Design and fulfills Section A: Course Design, Section B: Interaction, Section C: Assessment, and Section D: Accessibility. Participants who successfully complete this course will earn a certificate badge.
Duration: 12 weeks
Time Commitment: approximately 10 hours per week, for a total of 120 hours
Level of Difficulty: Intermediate. If this is your first time designing an online course, or your first time using Canvas, we strongly suggest you begin with Introduction to Teaching with Canvas. 

Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • develop a comprehensive course plan for a fully online or hybrid course
  • use the core features of the Canvas course management system to design an online or hybrid course
  • develop an introductory orientation module
  • develop a learning unit with clear objectives aligned to the course outcomes
  • design accessible course content
  • integrate Open Educational Resources and other material curated from the internet to support student learning
  • design formative and summative assessments to support and measure student learning
  • use a variety of communication tools, both within and external to Canvas, to support student success

Level of Difficulty: Intermediate. To get the most from this course, you should have some familiarity with online teaching and with Canvas. This course is a recommended starting point for the Online Teaching & Design Certificate.

Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  • discuss the value of using the OEI Course Design Rubric to design a quality online course,
  • use backward design principles to start a course plan;
  • plan online learning units with measurable outcomes;
  • determine "next steps" for building an online course.

Creating Accessible Online Courses provides an overview of accessibility within online courses, focusing on the skills you will need to make your course both technically accessible and usable to a broad range of students. The course covers how to use online tools, including your course management system (CMS), to create accessible resources, to retrofit existing resources, and to curate new resources. The focal point of the course is learning how to use editors (both in your CMS and in common software, such as Microsoft Word) to enhance accessibility.

Duration: 4 weeks
Time Commitment: approximately 10 hours per week, for a total of 40 hours
Level of Difficulty: Intermediate. To get the most from this course, you should have some familiarity with online teaching and with Canvas, and already have an existing Canvas course (or the start of a course). For those who have never taught online, it is highly recommended you take Introduction to Course Design and Introduction to Canvas before beginning this course.

Outcomes

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Apply Universal Design concepts to the planning and design of your online course;
  • Define accessibility and apply pertinent Federal, State, and District requirements to the planning and design of your online course;
  • Identify barriers to access that impede student success;
  • List campus resources available to assist you and your students with accessibility issues;
  • Create accessible content within your CMS;
  • Create accessible documents using Word, Google docs, PowerPoint, and/or PDF;
  • Caption video;
  • Check curated resources for accessibility using online tools.

To enroll in the capstone course, you must be an employee of a California Community College.

Description

This capstone course will guide you along the path to earning your Certificate in Online Teaching & Design, and to building an online course that will engage students, support their learning and your teaching, and align to the OEI Course Design Rubric.

Upon completion of our four, 4 week courses, you will register for the Online Teaching & Design (4x4) Capstone course. This capstone course will give you the opportunity to present your course and demonstrate how your course aligns with the OEI Course Design Rubric to support student success. You will also work with a mentor who will guide you through the process.

Details

Fulfills: This capstone project is the culminating course for the Certificate in Online Teaching & Design. (After you complete the four, 4-week courses.)
Duration: Participants have up to 60 days with your mentor to complete the capstone project and earn the certificate.
Time Commitment: Approximately 40 hours
Level of Difficulty: Intermediate. Participants will apply the technical skills they have learned throughout their coursework to the design of an online course.

Outcomes

By the end of this program, you will be able to design an online or hybrid course in Canvas that is aligned to the OEI Course Design rubric. Elements include:

  • A well-developed syllabus tailored to online delivery;
  • A well-designed home page;
  • Clear course navigation;
  • Well-developed units that include clear objectives and multimedia content;
  • Clear instructions, tutorial materials, and additional resources to meet the needs of diverse students;
  • Opportunities for meaningful peer-to-peer interaction;
  • Planning and design for regular effective contact;
  • A variety of formative and summative assessments;
  • Accessible activities and instructional content.

Optional Graduate-Level University Credit

Assessment is not just for testing anymore! This course explores the concept of assessment as a design tool that allows you to build a course centered around student learning. In this course, we’ll explore a design process called the assessment loop, looking at the ways clear learning outcomes, thoughtfully designed assessment, and analysis of assessment results can help you engage your students and build a better course. The course covers writing clear unit-level learning goals, aligning assessments to learning goals, developing authentic summative assessments and developing formative assessments that provide rich and meaningful feedback for students. In addition, we’ll explore various assignment options in Canvas, and develop an overarching plan for using assessments in digital learning environments.
